Dav...I am coming very late to this party, however:<br /><br />David Ayelon, the author of Gunpowder and firearms in the Mameluk kingdom, specifically says that the Muslims did not discover gunpowder and dates the first use of firearms in the Muslim lands to sometime in the 14th century.
